TxDOT Begins Program to Test New Speed Limit System

Posted: Updated:
(KCEN) -- TxDOT is testing a new variable speed limit system in three locations across Texas. I-20 in Eastland County, Loop 1604 in San Antonio, and I-35 in Temple.

Temple was selected because of the amount of construction on the road. The new electronic speed limit signs are posted along northbound I-35 from one mile south of Midway Drive to about one mile south of S. Loop 363.

The system will alert drivers of upcoming road conditions and traffic congestion. This will then appropriately adjust speed limits by sensors and electronic signs. Hopefully preventing backups and crashes.

“I really do hope this works out well,” said Corporal Chris Wilcox of the Temple Police Department. “Anything we can do to help increase the safety of the general public we’re ecstatic about.”

The test will go on for three months. If it turns out to beneficial, the variable speed limit system could serve as a model for additional roadways across the state.
