Waco ISD Won't Move Forward with Plans for Floyd Casey Stadium

Posted: Updated:
(KCEN) -- The future of The Case goes back to the drawing board.

Waco ISD considered taking over the iconic Floyd Casey Stadium property, but those plans came to a halt at Thursday night's school board meeting.

Board president Pat Atkins said they ditched the plans to for multiple reasons, one being the roughly $1.6 million demolition cost.

Atkins also said the district didn’t have any real need for the property, and any money they put into could be better spent on educational needs.

Part of the stadium property also belongs to the City of Waco, not to Baylor. That would have required a separate agreement with the city, Atkins said.

Part of the special TIF (tax increment financing) agreement for Baylor's new McLane Stadium notes Floyd Casey has to be torn down by the beginning of 2016.

At that point, Atkins said, “anything's possible,” but added the district is “not in the land speculating business.”

He said if WISD looks at the property again in two years, they’ll have a specific plan for what they want to do with it.
