Central Texas Law Enforcement Looking For Drunk Boaters

Posted: Updated:
(KCEN) --  Local law enforcement will be looking for drunk boaters this weekend in Central Texas.
The Bell County Sheriff's Department and Texas Game Wardens made the announcement on Friday at Temple Lake Park.
The national weekend-long initiative is called Operation Dry Water and is an effort to detect and enforce laws against drinking and boating.

Police and game wardens will be out on patrol on both Belton and Stillhouse Hollow lakes looking for suspected drunk boaters.

Operation Dry Water began in 2009 to draw public attention to the hazards of drinking and boating.

A BWI charge carries the same punishment as a DWI charge.

During this enforcement effort last year, nearly 300 people were arrested on BWI related charges.
