Adaptive ski clinic gives the disabled a chance to surf the lake

BULLARD (KYTX) - Nearly 30 people hit lake Palestine for the third annual special adaptive ski clinic. The non-profit group -- Texas Adaptive Aquatics -- provided boats and special ski equipment for disabled kids and adults to enjoy a day on the water.

CBS 19's Katiera Winfrey explains why participants say this event gives them a little break from the norm.

Waves and modified skis carry these smiling faces over the water...

"It's awesome, it's my third ski clinic," said Fallon Turner who is a national champion wheelchair body builder.

Using crutches to walk hasn't kept her from much and it's not keeping her out of the water.

"I recommend it for anyone that has multiple disabilities."

She along with 27 other people with disabilities and their family members converged on lake Palestine for the event.

"I never thought i'd be able to ski," said Mandy Crenshaw. Unlike many of her fellow skiers, has only been in a wheelchair for five months following a car accident.

"I went airborne jumped bout 20 feet into the air, we landed I broke my back."

Her 8-year-old son Tanner was in the car at the time of the accident, but he is fine.

"I wish they had this all day, it's an awesome opportunity to go around see people in chairs and hang out with them," Tanner said.

Crenshaw, said after the accident, her goals were to learn how to be independent and learn how to be a mom again.

"Things like this helps me do that, it fights off the depression, it fights off the scariness of it," she said.

So far she's done well, despite some apprehension about getting back into the water..

"That was my goal everyday to get back into society," Crenshaw said.

The experiences earned on this lake are a bond that will forever be shared with participants and their families.

"It makes me feel good and not lonely."

That bond, is one thing that will keep all this going.
