Car burglarized in broad daylight could have been prevented

TROUP (KYTX)- Glass shards still sit in the spot where two men robbed a car yesterday at the Dollar General in Troup.

"These scumbags, if they see a purse and they have the opportunity to get it, they're going to break your window to get it so always take your valuables out," Troup Police Chief Pat Hendrix said.

Troup Police Chief Pat Hendrix says investigators don't have much more information than surveillance video.

"We also have a witness that saw these same 2 black males pull up in a white 4 door passenger car," Hendrix said. "They never entered the store, they just went to the front, looking in as if they were casing the store seeing if the driver of this vehicle was still in the store. Once she came back out she found her purse missing."

The driver was only in the store for minutes. Chief Hendrix says auto burglaries can happen in seconds.

"I can walk up to this vehicle, break this window, reach in and get the valuables and be in my vehicle and gone in 15 seconds so the time that it takes to do this is just a split second," Hendrix said.

Hendrix says it's easy to prevent these burglaries.

"My main thing would be and we say this and try to reiterate this as much as possible, do not leave valuables in your vehicle, especially in plain view," Hendrix said.

Troup business owner Cindy Steele says this incident will cause her to think twice before leaving anything in her car.

"Nothing is ever easy anymore," Steele said. "We just have to be more alert and most of us don't think that way so that's unfortunate but that's the way it is."

The Troup Police Department says this isn't the only incident of its kind in the surrounding areas.

"Just in this week period we've had a little bit of a problem with this," Hendrix said.

Police are still looking for the suspects. If you have any information on this burglary, call the Troup Police Department or Crime Stoppers to help catch the suspects.
