Gilmer native seeks more recognition for musical family

Posted: Updated:
GILMER (KYTX) - Music is a constant in Benny Turner's family.
His brother was the late blues legend Freddie King, a 2012  inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
Turner, who toured with king until his death in 1976, says he remembers their mother, Ella Mae King Turner, playing guitar.
"Played good guitar, rhythm, rhythm guitar, no picking, just rhythm," Benny Turner says, adding that music was second nature growing up in Gilmer.
He and his brother went to Bruce colored school, now a Gilmer junior high campus.
He now lives in New Orleans, but he was in East Texas this week as crews at East Springfield Cemetery near Gilmer placed a headstone on his mother's gravesite.
Turner wants his family's musical heritage more well known.
His tribute album to King, released in 2011, included songs dedicated to their mother and their late uncle Leon King, also a musician who died in the 1940s.
After two years from music, Turner is back, planning a 2015 reunion tour with old band mates.
"We might come through here, because we're going to start in Dallas," he says.
Turner says he's planning to release another album with songs dedicated to his brother's musical career.
