Health Alert: Doctors in the south prescribe more painkillers

(CBS)-  Doctors in one particular part of the country are more likely to prescribe you an opioid painkiller.  That's according to the centers for disease control.  Health care providers in the south wrote the most opioid painkiller prescriptions in 2012.  The highest prescribing state, Alabama, had three times as many opioid prescriptions per person as Hawaii, the lowest prescribing state.

(CBS)- In another CDC study, half of all adults suffer from at least one chronic condition like diabetes, heart disease or obesity.  A quarter of adults have two or more chronic conditions. The CDC says most stem from a small number of risk factors that are largely preventable including tobacco and alcohol use, poor diet and lack of exercise.

(CBS)-  Obese children are more likely to develop asthma.  British researchers surveyed nearly 5000 seven year olds in their study.  They found genetic evidence that obesity is driving the growing number of asthma cases worldwide.

(KYTX)- A series of six free diabetes management classes starts Thursday. The diabetes education empowerment program, or deep, is sponsored by UT Health Northeast.  It aims to teach people how to deal with diabetes.  At the free classes, you will learn about diabetes risk factors and complications, as well as how to manage diabetes through better nutrition and physical activity.
