Texas May Sue Government Over Border Crisis

Posted: Updated:
(NBC NEWS) -- As the government struggles to deal with a crush of unaccompanied children who have streamed over the southern border, Texas officials on Thursday said they may sue the Department of Homeland Security over its handling of the crisis.

Texas State Attorney General Greg Abbott is considering legal action after his request for $30 million for border enforcement went unanswered, a spokesman told NBC news. More than 52,000 unaccompanied children have crossed the border since Oct. 1.

“If the federal government is unwilling to secure the border, the State of Texas will be forced to resort to litigation to recoup the costs incurred to respond to this crisis,” Abbott’s office said in an e-mail Thursday.

Abbott sent a letter to Homeland Security Secretary Jeh Jonnson on June 12, asking for $30 million to help stop drug smuggling that, he said, an overwhelmed Customs and Border Protection has been unable to combat. Border Protection did not immediately respond to a request for comment from NBC News.
