(KCEN) -- A woman was found dead in a smoked filled motel room at the Palace Inn on 6200 E. Veterans Blvd. in Killeen a little after 11:30 Saturday morning.

Killeen Police Communications Director Carroll Smith says Killeen police were called to the motel for a possible structure fire. When they arrived on the scene they were told the motel's maintenance crews had been checking rooms for a possible fire. When the crews arrived at room 219 they smelled smoke.

The room was filled with smoke when they entered. That’s where they found the body of a woman.

The Killeen Fire Dept. and Justice of the Peace Cook confirmed the woman's death. She has been identified as a 25-year-old, black female.

The reservation had been made for one person and she was the only person in the room. Police believe the woman checked in last night.

The woman's body has been sent to Dallas for an autopsy. Smith says they will not know the actual cause of death until autopsy.

The Killeen Police Dept. and the Killeen Fire Dept. are working together in investigating the incident.
