A History of the ALICO Flag

Posted: Updated:
(KCEN) -- The stars and stripes fly almost everywhere you look in Waco. On street corners, attached to buildings and even painted on windows.

And if you look up there's a flag you can't miss for miles around.

"It's something everyone in Waco is familiar with and we're real proud of it," said Vice President of Systems Administration at the ALICO building Mike Blanton.

For 100 years an American flag has flown above the ALICO building. Mike Blanton's crew is responsible for keeping it there.

"We try to keep it in good shape, replace them when we need to," said Blanton.

The ALICO flags have been through a lot over the years.

"If it's just a little bit windy down on ground level, you can be sure it's blowing fairly hard up here," Blanton explained.

Including the worst tornado in Waco history.

"This building was left standing along with the flag pole with very little damage to it," said Blanton. "In fact this became the control center during that time of crisis."

Even Hollywood couldn't blow hard enough to take down the flag. "It was a period movie from back in the 50s and they had the old cars and everything on the street down there," said Blanton. "Obviously they determined that it had more stars on it now than back in the fifties."

The film crew asked for the flag to be removed.  Blanton said they weren't going to do that.

Today the flag is a symbol of pride for downtown Waco.

"It's nice to come up here on top of the building every once in a while and take a look off in the distance all around it just gives you a little different perspective of the whole city from up here," said Blanton.

Blanton is confident about that city's future. And he's positive about the future of the ALICO flag.
