Half Year Report: Tyler's economic development

TYLER (KYTX) - This has been a particularly good year for the U.S. and the state of Texas economically, but it's been even better for Tyler.  

Even at the beck end of a recession, economically speaking, Tyler has a lot to be proud of.

"So many sectors of the economy, everything from energy to tourism, to medical, retail, technology, are all doing better. Construction's coming back, we've seen a lot of real estate activity," says Tom Mullins with the Tyler Economic Development Council.

The brand new Village at Cumberland Park Shopping Center will start opening 120 new stores on South Broadway this summer, adding even more jobs to a market that's already pretty strong.  

"The unemployment rate is down, more people are finding jobs," Mullins says.

 Those jobs are spread across many industries, some that are just starting to gain a lot of attention in Tyler.  

"A lot of jobs in telecommunications, software, Internet, a lot of small tech firms have discovered Tyler," Mullins says.

Take for example Centene, a national medical insurance company, that's already opened up in the city.

"A new claim center that will serve 19 states, have 325 employees, they've built a new 50-thousand sq. foot office building on a 25 acre campus," Mullins says.

While new tech companies begin to flourish in Tyler, there's one industry that continues to struggle.  Manufacturing business has been down for about five years now as jobs are transferred out of the country.

"But we had some good news this year, because Trane is bringing some jobs back from Mexico," Mullins says. "We have some new activity, prospects looking at the Carrier building that was left empty when they went to Mexico."

Mullins says improving the manufacturing industry is a goal he'll keep in mind for the rest of the year.  

Some other goals include supporting already-successful businesses in Tyler, as well as taking time to help grow smaller start up companies with big ideas.
