Longview musician following passion to college scholarship

LONGVIEW (KYTX) - Charlotte Halton wanted her son to be a doctor, but from the moment Robdrick Halton picked up a clarinet, his destiny was clear.

"He would bring an instrument home, and I would say, 'Where are you going with that?' And he would say, 'I'm gonna teach myself how to play it.' And within two weeks, he would play it," she says.

And he learned to play them well, five instruments in all.

Two years ago, he became the state's first student to earn all-area band honors on two different instruments.

Halton says he loves every note of it, performing in the Longview High School Lobo Band -- and the East Texas Symphonic Band.

"The first thing it's taught me is there's a lot you have to put into it, but you don't mind it. Yet and still, if you put work into it, you get better. That's in everything you do," he says.
