Bullard ISD superintendent says leaving district is bittersweet

Posted: Updated:
BULLARD (KYTX) - The Bullard Independent School District Superintendent announced that he will be leaving just this past week. He sat down for his first on air interview about his new job Wednesday with CBS 19.

Superintendent Keith Bryant has been at Bullard ISD for the past six years and he says recently an offer from Lubbock Cooper ISD fell into his lap, and he couldn't refuse it.

"This has all happened within the last two to three weeks, so it's been a very quick timeline," Superintendent Keith Bryant says.

Bryant says he wasn't looking to leave Bullard ISD. He says administrators from Lubbock Cooper contacted him.

"Lubbock Cooper is a district of about 5,000 students growing at about 9 to 10 percent a year so almost double what Bullard is," he says.

Bullard is a growing district as well. It's now has more than 2,300 students, and a 5 percent growth from year to year.

"I guess some people want to climb the ladder. Me, not necessarily. I just want to look for the right fit and when good opportunities come along it's just hard to pass up," Bryant says.

He won't be moving to unfamiliar territory.

"I grew up in West Texas, I went to Texas Tech, and my mom still lives in West Texas," he says.

HE SAYS HE'LL BE LUCKY TO HAVE HALF THE SUCCESS THERE THAT HE HAD IN BULLARD.

"I think the things I'll walk away feeling really good about are first of all, we're in great financial shape. We've grown the fund balance in the last 6 years about 55 percent. So we've been very careful with taxpayer money."

Bullard also weathered the state cuts during the recession without cutting any teachers or other staff positions.

Academically speaking,Bryany says he's most proud of the recent technology immersion in classrooms.

"Every middle and high school kid has a MacBook assigned to them and the teachers have embraced that and met kids where they are with technology," he says.

He says Bullard will always stay close to his heart.

"It is a fantastic district with very high academic achievement and strong extracurricular success and this district is going to do great things moving forward and I'll be anxious to see the progress they make," he says.

The Bullard ISD board members already met Monday night to talk about whether they want to use a search firm to find the next superintendent, and they'll meet Thursday night to find out whether they'll appoint an interim superintendent until they find a new one.

Lubbock Cooper has a board meeting scheduled for July 31, when it will officially name Bryant the new superintendent. If all goes according to plan , he should start work there the very next day, on August 1.
