Precious Preemie Surpasses Expectations

(KCEN) -- There's no doubt she's feisty. Making her big debut ten weeks early and weighing in at a whopping two pounds, Isla Faye Jones keeps surpassing all expectations.

"She is a diva for sure," her mom Erica laughed. "She really doesn't want to be messed with, and she was ready to go home."

Isla's story begins much earlier than her arrival on May 24th. For five years Erica and her husband, Specialist Stanlee Jones, tried to have a baby. They kept hitting a wall with complication after complication. Erica decided to have weight loss surgery, and lost 130 pounds. It wasn't long after, they were on their way to parenthood. The two couldn't wait... and neither could Isla.

During her pregnancy, doctors told Erica it was unlikely she would hold to full term. Isla was on her own schedule. That August 2nd due date wasn't cutting it, and she decided to come early on May 24th. She was immediately rushed into Darnall's NICU and hooked up to machines and tubes.

"I just just had to put all my faith in them, and trust that the nurses knew what they were doing," Erica said.

Each day it became harder to leave little Isla at the hospital. Doctors told them she probably wouldn't be able to come home until August, when she was originally due.

But one by one, those tubes started to vanish. And ounce by ounce Isla started to gain weight. Again, Ms. Feisty was on her own schedule and decided August was taking too long. To their surprise, Erica and Stanlee were able to take their baby girl, now four pounds, home on July 2nd - a full month early.

"Oh we were beyond words. We can't explain how excited we were," she said. "She's here in real life, and it still feels like a dream."

Isla has doubled her weight, grown one inch, and just keeps getting bigger and feistier. She might have trouble learning patience, but being a princess won't be a problem. "Oh she's going to be spoiled, 100%," Erica laughed.

Besides giving Isla iron and vitamin D for growth, Erica says she is perfectly healthy.
