PLEASANTON, Calif., July 10, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- The Vons Companies, Inc. was notified today that Foster Farms is voluntarily recalling certain chicken products that may have been contaminated with Salmonella Heidelberg. Vons, in cooperation with the Foster Farms recall, is voluntarily recalling a limited number of products sold in its Vons and Pavilions stores made with chicken supplied by Foster Farms. The products have "Use or Freeze By" dates ranging from March 17, 2014 through March 28, 2014 and were sold in all Vons and Pavilions stores (located in Southern California and Southern Nevada.) The items were sold in March 2014 from both the self-service and full-service meat cases. Because the items were sold fresh, they are no longer available in stores.

The recall includes all marinated or seasoned fresh chicken products sold from the self-service or full-service counter with "Use or Freeze By" dates ranging from March 17 through March 28. The marinades and season flavors include: Bulgogi, Charmoula, Greek Lemon, Drunken, Yellow Curry, Caribbean Jerk, Buffalo and Chipotle Brown Sugar.

In addition, the following products sold from the self-serve meat counter are also being recalled. They also display "Use or Freeze By" dates ranging from March 17 through March 28:

  • Eating Right Boneless Skinless Chicken Breasts
  • Eating Right Boneless Skinless Chicken Thighs
  • Safeway Farms Small Tray Drumsticks
  • Safeway Farms Small Tray Split Breasts
  • Safeway Farms Small Tray Thighs
  • Safeway Farms Small Tray Wings
  • Safeway Farms Value Pack Drumsticks
  • Safeway Farms Value Pack Leg Quarters
  • Safeway Farms Value Pack Thighs
  • Safeway Farms Value Pack Wings

Foster Farms has been notified of one illness associated with its products. While Vons is not aware of illnesses associated with these products purchased from our stores, out of an abundance of caution, we are asking customers to check their freezers for the products listed above.

Salmonella is an organism which can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Healthy persons infected with Salmonella often experience fever, diarrhea (which may be bloody), nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain. In rare circumstances, infection with Salmonella can result in the organism getting into the bloodstream and producing more severe illnesses such as arterial infections (i.e., infected aneurysms), endocarditis and arthritis.

Customers who purchased these products should discard them or return them for a full refund. For more information, customers can call 1-866-SAFEWAY 24 hours a day.
