Man sentenced to life for brutal home-invasion rape in North Texas

FORT WORTH (WFAA) — An 18-year-old man received a life sentence for a crime in which the victim was raped and then stabbed more than a dozen times inside her Fort Worth home.

According to a statement from Tarrant County District Attorney Joe Shannon, Juan Olmos broke into the victim's home early in the morning on July 30, 2013. Armed with a knife and naked from the waist down, Olmos raped the woman for more than two hours in her bed and then in the bed of her mother, who was at work at the time of the assault.

He used duct tape to cover the woman's mouth and eyes and bound her wrists and ankles.

"At one point, the tape over the woman's eyes slipped and she was able to see her attacker and his knife, which he had set down," the statement read.

Authorities said Olmos and the victim became involved in a fight over the knife when she grabbed it and attempted to stab him.

"The woman testified that she fought him as hard as she could and, at one point, she grabbed his testicles and squeezed, literally trying to 'rip them off,'" the statement read.

After she attempted to flee to no avail, she played dead. Authorities said it was the suspect's saliva that he left behind when he spit on the victim's body that led to a DNA match. Police said when they later talked with Olmos at his home, he was also wearing black rosary beads that matched the description the victim told police her attacker wore at the time of the assault.

Authorities said the victim sustained 19 wounds, underwent surgery and continues to suffer from post-traumatic stress disorder.

It took jury members 30 minutes of deliberation before they handed down the sentence. Olmos will not be eligible for parole until he serves 30 years of his life sentence.
