SMITH CO (KYTX) – The Smith County Sheriff’s office received a call from the Van Zandt County Sheriff’s office regarding a possible sexual assault of a teenage girl.

The Van Zandt County Sheriff’s Office advised that they had taken a preliminary report from the victim, before determining that the alleged assault occurred within Smith County.

A Smith County Sheriff’s Office deputy was immediately dispatched to the emergency room of a Tyler hospital to interview the victim. The 17 year old victim stated she had been sexually assaulted by a 24 year old male, whom she knew through her work.

Smith County deputies and detectives were dispatched to the suspect’s residence and spoke with the suspect’s father. The suspect returned home and after speaking with the deputies, agreed to accompany them to the downtown Sheriff’s Office building to be interviewed.

At that time, the Smith County Sheriff’s Office Crime Scene division arrived at the residence to execute an evidentiary search warrant. Items from the residence were collected as evidence.

Pending analysis of the evidence and test results, the investigation is ongoing.

More information will be released as it becomes available. However due to the sensitivity and nature of the investigation, details will be limited.

The alleged incident occurred July 8, 2014.
