Scam artists are hacking into Facebook profiles of East Texans

Posted: Updated:
TYLER (KYTX)- We all know how important it is to watch what we post on Facebook.

With more people using social media, there are even greater ways to get hacked.

Facebook is very important to Lisa Allen. Not only does she use it for entertainment, she uses it for work as well.

"I use it to recruit for special needs people with special skills," Allen said. "I use it to tell people out there my friends and their friends that there are jobs opening so we use it for all sorts of things."

Allen had never changed her password and last week she learned she had been hacked.

"I got a phone call from one of my friends on Facebook saying you have been hijacked, someone has been taking and sending out messages for you," Allen said.

That friend was Mechele Mills with the Better Business Bureau, someone who deals with this every day.

She says the most important step you can take is to make sure your privacy settings are up to date.

"Go to your privacy settings and you set them only to friends only because you don't want everyone having access to your photos and your other personal information, really important to do that," Mills said.

When hackers get access to your Facebook, they can eventually get to all the files on your computer.

"They can download viruses, they can download malware which could send something through to your computer and gather information which you might have that could be valuable to the scam artist," Mills said.

Information like passwords and bank account pins, things Mills says should not be kept on the computer.

As for Allen, she's learned how important it is to keep her Facebook private.

"We don't think that it's going to happen to us but I'm telling you if you don't take care of your settings, if you don't watch your privacy settings if you don't change your password you absolutely can be like me and be violated," Allen said.

Mills suggests changing your password every six months to make sure this doesn't happen to you.
