Health Alert: Wrong script for flu sufferers

(CBS)- New research finds many doctors are incorrectly prescribing antibiotics to treat the flu, when they should be prescribing anti-virals.  Health experts say if influenza symptoms are present, anti-viral meds are the recommended treatment. Meanwhile, an annual flu shot is still the best defense against catching the flu.

(CBS)- Women making the difficult choice to undergo a double mastectomy when cancer is diagnosed in one breast receive only a marginal increase in life expectancy,  according to a new study. Researchers at the University of Minnesota found the average gain was just a few months. The procedure was somewhat more beneficial for younger women and women in early stages of the disease.

(CBS)- People have been using it for years, but now a prominent cardiologist at Northwestern Medicine says the B vitamin Niacin is too dangerous for routine cholesterol treatment. A new study found that Niacin increases the risk of death, has dangerous side effects and provides no benefit in reducing heart attacks and strokes. Researchers say it should be used only for patients at the highest risk for heart disease and stroke who cannot take statins.
