Update: Storms leave thousands of East Texans without electricity

Posted: Updated:

(KYTX) - Last night's storms left thousands of East Texans in the dark. As of 2 p.m. Thursday, ONCOR reports 4,000 outages in Tyler, Athens, and the Palestine area.

SWEPCO is reporting just over 1,600 outages as of Thursday afternoon. The outages are reported in Van Zandt, Franklin, Wood, Upshur, Gregg,Morris and Cass Counties.

Upshur Rural Electric Cooperative reports around 226 customers are still without power. Last night’s storm left approximately 9500 Upshur Rural Electric members out of service. Crews and contractors have been out in the field since the storm hit working to restore power. As of this afternoon, approximately 9200 have been restored which leaves a projected 226 still without power. UREC reports that six line devices still out and the remainders are individual outages. We estimate that the majority of the 226 still out of service will be restored by nightfall.

The outages were widespread from the Pittsburg area down to Longview and across to Hallsville.

Crews have been out throughout the day restoring electricity following last nights heavy storms.

Restoration efforts are ongoing for the system-wide power outages that affected over 10,000 Wood County Electric Cooperative meters following the high winds and lightning Wednesday night..

Electric companies reported numerous lines down, and broken poles. Linemen worked through the night and crews are still working hard to get everyone restored.

Report outages by calling the high volume outage hotline at 1-866-415-2951 or by calling the cooperative at 903-763-2203.

Those with mobile communications devices can check the real-time progress of outages and restoration by going to www.wcec.org and clicking the Current Outages link on the bottom left of the screen.
