Pittsburg's Coca-Cola Mural Will Be Restored

Posted: Updated:
PITTSBURG (KYTX) - Chuck Johns has lived in Pittsburg his entire life, and has spent most days passing by this mural.  Coca-Cola owned a bottling plant in Pittsburg  from the early 1930s until the late 1980's and left this footprint behind.

"We take pride in our heritage, and we want it to look as close as it did in the 30s." - Chuck Johns, Resident

Johns even has a collection of classic bottles from the plant. This one was made at the plant in the 30s and Johns found it while he was digging up old bushes.

"I don't throw many things away." - Johns

But this mural is everyone's treasure.  The ad was painted in the middle of the historic downtown district but time has washed away its vibrance.  And we all know green isn't a part of the Coca-Cola logo. Faded paint, chipped bricks, and a crumbling foundation are a few of the things Main Street Manager Jenny Rowan wants fixed.

"The community feels at one with it. It represents our history." - Jenny Rowan, Pittsburg Main Street Manager

The restoration will begin next Wednesday  at the intersection of Highway 11 and 238.  It is expected to cost $4,000. The city has hired a sign restoration expert to help.  "Most people think that we can just slap some paint on there but there is a lot of accuracy that goes into historic preservation. We want to make sure it's done right. and in the proper way so we save this." - Jenny Rowan
