HIDALGO COUNTY (CNN) - The first wave National Guard Troops are in the Rio Grande Valley. They're manning observation posts at several locations.
50 guardsmen arrived earlier this week. They are part of about 1,000 troops called up by Governor Rick Perry. During a visit to a National Guard Training Center outside of Austin, Perry said the troops were needed to defend the nation.
He said it's time to stop calling criminals "cartels" and "gangs" and start calling them what they really are: "narco-terrorists," because they are terrorizing americans.
Perry also said they're needed to help secure the border while the border patrol focused on the surge of illegal crossers. That surge included 63-thousand unaccompanied minors since October. Most of them are coming from Central America.
