Eight TISD campuses earn distinctions

Posted: Updated:

TYLER (TISD) – Eight Tyler ISD campuses earned a total of 20 distinctions for the 2014 school year.

The Texas Education Agency (TEA) recently released accountability ratings for school districts and charter schools across the state. Schools who received a “Met Standard” rating can earn up to seven additional honors, or distinctions, for outstanding performance in various areas in relation to a comparison group of campuses.

The seven distinction categories include academic achievement in Reading/English Language Arts (ELA), Math, Science and Social Studies, along with three additional distinctions in the areas of student progress, closing performance gaps, and post-secondary readiness. Student achievement distinctions are awarded based on student performance on the annual STAAR test.

“Earning a distinction is not easy,” said TEA Commissioner of Education Michael Williams. “Any school earning one or more distinctions should be recognized in its community for the outstanding work taking place on that campus.”

Elementary and high schools can earn six out of the seven available distinctions.

Birdwell Elementary School earned five out of six distinctions in academic achievement in Reading/ELA, Mathematics, Science, top 25 percent student progress, and top 25 percent closing performance gaps. Caldwell Elementary Arts Academy earned distinctions in academic achievement in Reading/ELA and Science. Dr. Bryan C Jack Elementary School earned distinctions in academic achievement in Reading ELA and post-secondary readiness. Owens Elementary School earned a distinction in academic achievement in Science and Rice Elementary School earned a distinction in academic achievement in Reading/ELA.

“We are extremely proud of all of the schools that met standards and even more pleased with our schools that earned one or more of the seven identified distinction designation categories,” Laura Cano, executive director of elementary education, said.

John Tyler High School received a distinction in the academic achievement in Science category.

Middle school campuses can earn distinctions in all seven categories. Hogg Middle School received a distinction in student achievement in Reading/ELA. Moore MST Magnet School is among the 4.7% campuses across the state to receive every distinction for which they are eligible.

“We are so proud of the hard work that went into earning distinctions at both John Tyler High School and Hogg Middle School, and Tyler ISD is extremely proud of Moore MST Magnet School for earning all seven distinctions,” Joseph Coburn, executive director of secondary education, said. “All of our secondary schools are striving to reach those lofty heights this year.”
