Hunger Action Month

Posted: Updated:
(TYLER) - September is Hunger Action Month.  The East Texas Food Bank wants you to help raise awareness about hunger in America by wearing the color orange on Thursday, September 4.

Every four years, Feeding America conducts a hunger action study to find out how many people depend on food pantries and meal services programs to survive.

The 2014 study was just released.  It shows more than 252,000 East Texans rely on assistance from the food bank every year.  That's a jump from the last study, which showed about 182,000 East Texans depend on the food bank annually.

Communications director Karolyn Davis says these are families struggling to make ends meet.

"Most people think that these are families, perhaps, that aren't working, this or that. That's not true. Most of these families are working. There's one person in the household at least working."

Whether it's medical bills or car expenses, she says everyone is just one event away from being at risk of hunger.

"None of them want to be in those lines at our partner food pantries asking for assistance. But, we are glad that they will step up and ask for help when they need it, especially to feed their families or their seniors."

Davis says one in four children and one in five adults in East Texas are at risk of hunger.
