Web Exclusive: Funnel Cake Ale, Fried Gulf Shrimp Boil earn Big Tex Awards-- Yum?

Posted: Updated:
(CBS/KTVT) - Are you counting down the days until the State Fair of Texas hits Fair Park in Dallas. Operators are out in the hot sun, setting up their rides and the smell of fried food is already in the air.

Judges have now made their selections in the annual Big Tex Choice Awards.

Oh sure., The rides are nice.  But the fair just isn't the fair without the food.  This year, the State Fair invited the public for a preview.

"We're just sitting here excited ready to eat," says some Fair food fans.
"We don't care about health," says Tom Simon.  "We're not about health today," says Staci Simon.

A panel of judges also got to taste.  They reviewed eight finalists for the Big Tex Choice Awards.  One of the winners wasn't food at all, but beer, funnel cake beer.

"I'm going to give this a really great compliment. I am a girl who doesn't like beer and I like this," says Cynthia Smoot.

That won for most creative entry.  The panel also picked the best tasting entry.  The winner was Fried Gulf Shrimp Boil.  The fried gulf shrimp boil is shrimp, potatoes, corn, onion and lemon, all fried into a ball.

"The ingredients are pretty easy to put together. It's like making meatloaf," says Clint Probst.

The family who won this year had a finalist in contention last year.  They expect business to double.

"Elated, elated and looking forward to jumping back to work as soon as we leave here. We have to double everything we had been planning on. We hoped it would happen and now it has happened," says Clint Probst.

Get your taste buds ready.  The Texas State Fair opens September 26th.
