East Texas students show off work at annual art exhibit

The Tyler Museum of Art is exhibit works by area high school students, who regardless of their plans for the future, share a common love of art.

TYLER, Texas — Students from 20 high schools in the Tyler-area showcased their works of art at the Tyler Museum or Art.

The museum hosted the High School Art Exhibition for its 15th year, allowing students like Carlie Sessions to display their work early on as they begin a focus toward their future.

"I hope to go to Savannah College of Design and do illustration or animation," Sessions said.

However, some students whose art was on display feel art is simply a hobby and have other goals in mine.

"I've always been focused on engineering and like math since middle school so that's been kind of my career path," Sarah Morales said.

Tyler Museum of Art Education Director Lisa Horlander says whether or not the students plan on pursuing a career in art does not matter. What is important about each piece goes well beyond the use of color or lighting.

"They showcase visually whats going on in their head in a way that is different," Horlander said. "A lot of these skills a kid is going to learn in high school can turn into other jobs that need an artistic eye."

The exhibit will be open at the Tyler Museum of Art until May 5.
