SMITH COUNTY, Texas — A 33-year-old Salvadoran citizen has been indicted for immigration violations in the Eastern District of Texas, according to a press release issued by the office U.S. Attorney Joseph D. Brown on Thursday.

Jose Eduardo Melara-Carcamo was named in an indictment returned by a federal grand jury on April 17, 2019 charging him with illegal reentry of a deported undocumented immigrant.

According to documents filed in court, on March 20, 2019, Melara was arrested for public intoxication in Henderson County, Texas. A deportation officer interviewed Melara and determined he was a citizen of El Salvador and allegedly was unlawfully present in the United States. In 2018, the same deportation officer had processed Melara for removal. A records check confirmed Melara had been previously deported to El Salvador in 2007, 2013 and 2018, and after each removal, he reentered the United States without consent.

If convicted, Melara faces up to two years in federal prison and deportation.
