Drilling company operating in Tyler completes $19 million natural gas drilling rig

SCANDRILL employs 380 people in Smith County and the surrounding areas.

TYLER, Texas — SCANDRILL, a drilling company operating in Tyler, celebrated the completion of a new $19 million natural gas drilling rig Monday.

The rig, nicknamed “Titan,” was built in the United States at SCANDRILL's facility in Tyler and utilized multiple businesses in the area to complete the job.

Something unique about SCANDRILL's 16th rig is it has feet on it that allow it to “walk” and drill different holes in a smaller area. The feature lessens the rig's environmental impact and makes it more efficient.

“The walking feet on the rig, the iron man on the rig, is a hydraulic cylinder that picks the rig up,” rig manager Dewayne Harris said. "It makes the rig capable of walking on location so you can drill multiple holes. Instead of moving the rig from location to location, you can drill multi-well on the same pad.”

SCANDRILL's “Titan” is powered by three 1,600 horsepower engines that can utilize natural gas in addition to diesel fuel.

Titan will be disassembled and moved to a drilling location south of Henderson to begin its work.
