Most Americans learn their ABCs and 123s early on in life, but a new survey found learning those numbers might be going a step too far.
CivicScience, a market research company, asked 3,624 respondents whether schools in America should teach "Arabic numerals" as part of the curriculum. The survey did not define what "Arabic numerals" meant.
A majority of the respondents, 56 percent, answered "no."
The thing is, "Arabic numerals" are 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 -- everyday numbers -- and so on and so forth.
John Dick, chief executive of CivicScience, tweeted the findings were "the saddest and funniest testament to American bigotry we’ve ever seen in our data."
The Independent reported Dick saying the goal of the research was to "tease out prejudice among those who didn’t understand the question."
