Tyler — Each Tuesday in May, East Texas moms who are expecting or have a baby less than 6-months-old can attend a free class designed to help them in their new journey of motherhood.

The class, which is being offered for the second time by Green Acres Baptist Church, was started to meet what some at the church saw as an important need in the community.

“We’ve had a lot of moms say ‘I wish someone had told me this; I wish I had known this…,” Jamie Cornelius, women’s ministry associate at Green Acres, said. “We thought, ‘Why not offer a condensed class and (bring it to) moms who are in the same season of life together?’”

The classes take place from 9:30-11 a.m. each Tuesday of this month in room 103 of the Adult Education Building. They begin with a breakfast and time for fellowship. Then speakers, which have included registered nurses and licensed professional counselors, come in and give advice.

Topics cover everything from health and wellness tips, to ways moms can seek help if they are experiencing sadness or depression.

A devotional also takes place during the class, and more experienced mothers are available to share advice with attendees.

Mrs. Cornelius describes the class as being pretty laid back. It’s not required that participants come every Tuesday morning in May. Each mom also can bring her baby to the class.

Twelve of the moms who participated in the class the first time the church offered it have since moved into the church’s Mothers of Preschoolers group.

She hopes mothers who come to the Tuesday class are able to leave feeling stronger and more supported.

“Basically it is just to equip the new moms and prepare them for what is going to happen,” Mrs. Cornelius said. “Our goal is just to connect moms and try to provide support however we can.”
