The City of Tyler Fire Department was awarded with a Staffing for Adequate Fire and Emergency Response (SAFER) Grant of $1.58 million from FEMA.

Thousands of fire departments competed for the grant and Tyler was one of only 10 departments chosen from Texas to receive the money.

After the grant is approved by Tyler City Council, the money will be provided to the city over a three-year period to hire 12 more firefighters.

Justin Dominy, president of the Tyler Professional Firefighters Association, IAFF Local 883 said, "Adequate staffing levels are crucial to ensure the safety of our citizens and firefighters."

When the grant is accepted by the city council, it would mean another step towards keeping Tyler's current favorable ISO (Insurance Services Office) Rating, which saves people who live in the city millions of dollars in insurance premiums.

If the grant receives approval, it will cover salaries and benefits for firefighters at a rate of 75 percent for the first two years and 35 percent in the third year.

The City of Tyler would be responsible for full salary and benefits starting the fourth year.
