SMITH COUNTY, Texas — The Smith County Sheriff's Office is investigating a shooting near Lindale.

According to the SCSO, on Monday around 12:45 p.m., deputies were called to the scene of a reported shooting in the 18500 block of Highway 69 North, just north of Lindale.

Prior to law enforcement arriving on scene, deputies were informed there were possibly two gunshot victims at the location.

When officials entered the home, they found a man and woman who had both been shot. The man was pronounced dead at the scene, but the woman was still conscious and was taken to a local hospital for treatment.

After collecting and documenting evidence at the scene, the SCSO determined the crime was an "aggravated assault-suicide."

Law enforcement says George "Trae" Herndon, 44, shot his wife with a small-caliber handgun before turning the gun on himself.

The woman is still hospitalized at this time and is in serious condition, but is stable at this time. Her name is being withheld until next of kin can be notified.
