ATHENS, Texas — In moments of tragedy, the strength of a community is always tested.
Late Friday afternoon, an Athens middle school student lost his life after his school bus was hit by an oncoming freight train on Cream Level Road. An elementary school student was also taken to a Dallas hospital in critical condition.
The tragedy brought scores of people to a prayer vigil to gather as a community to mourn and pray together.
However, the story extends far beyond Athens. School districts around East Texas are hoping to offer their support to the Athens community.
During a Friday night press conference, Athens superintendent Blake Stiles says the many area districts reached out to him offering counselors and other services.
On Monday, school districts around East Texas will show off their solidarity by wearing maroon.
