EXCLUSIVE: East Texas man recalls playing in first Super Bowl

CBS19's Tim Wolf spoke with former Kansas City Chiefs running back Bert Coan.

GARRISON, Texas — In 1967, the Kansas City Chiefs faced the Green Bay Packers in the first-ever Super Bowl.

For former Chiefs running back, Bert Coan, taking on the legendary Green Bay Packers was a daunting task.

"A little scary because Green Bay has been a number one," Coan said. "We played em pretty good for the first couple of quarters and then they were barely ahead, and they intercepted a pass and that kind of broke the leverage down for us."

The Chiefs were defeated by the Packers 35-10. Now, the Chiefs are back in the Super Bowl, but the game has changed quite a bit in 53 Years.

"Can throw a pass now and a guy and catch it over his head, I don't know how you do it. How can you turn it I look like it just happens," Coan said.

So, what did an NFL player's salary look like back then?

Coan says his biggest contract was for about $20,000.

As he gets ready to root for his Chiefs to break their 50 year Super Bowl win drought, Coan says he believes the game hinges on one thing.

"Whoever protects a quarterback the most, probably going to win. Having a guy like Mahomes, you never know what might happen really," Coan said.

He says Whitehouse native Patrick Mahomes is a phenomenal player. "If he doesn't get hurt he can set all kinds of records," Coan said.
