Fmr. Palestine football player wins appeal one year after attack

Michael Stanczak, then a senior at Palestine High School, was severely beaten in September of 2017 during football practice.

PALESTINE — A student at Elkhart High School, who was brutally attacked in a locker room, was granted an appeal to participate in sports as he gets set to return to school.

Michael Stanczak, then a senior at Palestine High School, was severely beaten in September of 2017 during football practice. When he was taken to the hospital, doctors found Stanczak had suffered multiple injuries to his head and face that required surgery.

Le'George Marquez Gray, another player on Palestine's football team, was charged for the assault. Allegedly he carried out the attack because Stanczak owed him money.

During his recovery, Stanczak missed school throughout his senior year while trying to transfer. Eventually, Stanczak enrolled into Elkhart High School.

A committee with the University Interscholastic League originally ruled that Stanczak could not participate in UIL activities due to the transfer.

Typically, a student is not allowed to transfer to a school outside of their zone for athletic purposes. However, the Stanczak's family maintained the transfer was in their son's best interest academically and for safety reasons.

Following an appeal, the State Executive Committee listened to testimony and ruled that Stanczak's transfer was indeed not to benefit his athletic career.
