Kilgore Fire is now moving forward with their 10-year plan that includes improving diversity in the department.
The city council approved the department's plan last night.
Currently, there are 36 firefighters with two women firefighters and one African-American. Chief Bellows wants those numbers to increase.
"In the future, providing programs in the high schools and junior colleges that try to draw local people into our department," Chief Bellows says.
The plan also considers building more fire stations to keep up with the growing population in Kilgore and need for comprehensive fire coverage.
Chief Bellows is pleased with the current response times but as always firefighters are constantly training to improve them.
The plan also looks at increased inspections. Officials will go into more homes and businesses to check fire codes, alarms, public occupancy and teach fire prevention.
