Man found shot in Smith Co. apartment, homicide investigation launched

The Smith County Sheriff's Office opened a homicide investigation after deputies found a man's body in the doorway of an apartment.

SMITH COUNTY — The Smith County Sheriff's Office are investigating a homicide just outside of Tyler.

According the sheriff's office, deputies responded to a call at an apartment building in the 5800 block of County Road 382 Sunday morning. When deputies arrived at the home, they found a man dead with a gunshot wound in the doorway to one of the apartments.

Deputies did not find any other victims.

After obtaining a warrant, Smith County Sheriff's Investigators and the Crime Scene Unit began collected evidence from the scene.

The sheriff's office has not identified the victim, but did say he was a Hispanic man in his 30s. Sheriff Smith says he was the lone person who lived in the complex.

"Right now it's a who-done-it homicide. You know that type of deal where we don't just have a body out here with a smoking gun or anything of that nature," Sheriff Larry Smith said. "They got a head start on us obviously because we can tell that from the scene here. We've got people out here in the community gathering information and hope to get a break on it."
