'Mums the Word': Homecoming Season in East Texas

A local business owner who specializes in the Texas tradition says whether you're looking for something conventional or funky and fun, she has a mum for everyone.

Kilgore — Nothing says homecoming in Texas like mums. A local business owner has been a part of the tradition for more than two decades.

Tonyah Garza owns 'An Elegant Touch Homecoming and Spirit Store' in Kilgore.

She makes mums for any age or occasion, from school spirit to funky and fun. She has mums that light up and others that are more cuddlesome.

It takes Garza all year to prepare.

"I start right after homecoming season. I take a month or two off and I start preparing," Garza said.

She makes hundreds of mums each year.

"I think organization is the best way. I'm very organized, or at least I try to be."

Garza precuts thousands of different ribbons and streamers.

"If I was to make one at a time, it would take a long time. But, because I precut and prep so much, I can put one together pretty quick."

It's a process she's done so often, Garza said she could practically make mums in her sleep. But its more than just a business for her.

"I enjoy the kids and I guess i'm kind of sentimental too. I think that's a lot of it...I think it's just a celebration and back to the homecoming, everybody coming back together."
