New HOPE center provides affordable health care to East Texans

East Texans who are uninsured can get medical care for $10.

JACKSONVILLE, Texas — A new health clinic in Jacksonville is providing affordable medical care to people without insurance.

The clinic opened its doors on August 13. It’s the new addition to Helping Others Pursue Enrichment (HOPE), a non-profit organization that provides emergency assistance to people in need.

The clinic was founded by Ellan Johnson the Director of HOPE and Dr. Elaine Ballard, a family nurse practitioner. The center is run by volunteer registered and nurses and students from UT Tyler’s nursing students.

The clinic provides medical attention for $10 to anyone who is uninsured and $5 for established patients.

“We just know the need in the community, we’re a medically underserved community. We just wanted to make sure that everybody has proper medical care,” Johnson said.

The clinic can treat a patient with the same care as a family practice.

“Chronic disease, like people who come here or their blood pressure for diabetes,” Ballard said. “All kinds of chronic problems that they have difficulty managing because they can't afford to go see a provider that costs like $100 for an office visit.”

Lab test services and transportation to and from the clinic will also be provided.

“Just give us a call and as long as our van is running,” Johnson said.

In addition, the clinic can help pay for medications at full cost or reduce the price.

The clinic is open on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. For more information call HOPE at 903-586-7781.
