Playing safe with fireworks this New Year's Eve

Shooting off fireworks in Tyler city limits is a Class C Misdemeanor.

TYLER — Jennifer Manley and her husband have been selling fireworks for 19 years at Union Fireworks off of Troup Highway and they're gearing up for the New Year.

"On New Year's Eve we'll have every window full and we've had the crowd way out there," Manley said.

Before you pop off those fireworks though it's important to remember how to do so safely.

"Well in the city limits we recommend you just do sparklers or we have little party poppers or even a little fountain that'll do a stand on the ground and do a glitter show," Manley said.

In the city of Tyler it is illegal to shoot fireworks inside city limits. If you're caught doing so it's a Class C Misdemeanor, which is a fine up to $500.

"You need to be out of the city limits for anything that's going to be in the air," Manley said.

Manley recommends people make sure they're lighting fireworks on a flat surface and only one at a time.

"Once you light it you need to get away," Manley said.

In case of a fire, she said it's smart to have something near by like a bucket of water or a fire extinguisher.

Then once you're done, you should soak or submerge the fireworks in water.

Your safety isn't the only concern though.

"Just keep your pets away from them," Manley said. "Make sure they're locked, it's going to scare them and we don't want anything happening to our babies."

But most importantly, have a happy and safe New Year's Eve celebration.
