Tashara Travels: The National Videogame Museum

In this week's #TasharaTravels, we are taking a trip to the National Videogame Museum in Frisco, Texas. According to organizers, the National Videogame Museum is the only museum in America dedicated to the history of the video game industry.

FRISCO, Texas – Not only is the National Videogame Museum in Frisco, Texas every gamers dream, it’s also a place where you can enjoy your next family outing.

From the moment you walk in, you’ll notice, this isn’t a traditional museum.

“You get to play everything,” said John Hardie, the Executive Director of the National Videogame Museum.

The museum is equipped with more than a 100,000 artifacts and more than 25 years of historical documents and data archives, according to the company’s website.

"What we offer is a whole history,” Hardie said. “We show you the history of videogames and how the industry evolved and changed and emerged as what we have today."

What started out as a traveling museum years ago, has for the last two years become an oasis for video game enthusiasts.

The museum's mission is simple – to preserve the history of the videogame industry by archiving not only the physical artifacts, but also the information and stories behind its creation.

According to its website, the goal of the National Videogame Museum is to document, firsthand, as much information about the creation and evolution of the videogame industry as possible and preserve as many physical artifacts as possible for generations to come.

The museum features more than a dozen displays – each with a little something for everyone to enjoy.

"We created a lot of scenarios, we have an 80s bedroom, we have an 80s living room and an 80s reproduction arcade,” he added. “Those are the things that bring the moms, [things] they can relate to, [the] nostalgia.”

According to a media release, the museum spans 10,000-square-feet.

As you walk through the museum, taking in the sights and sounds of each stage, you'll notice there's something to do at each display, and that's no coincidence.

"When we built this place, we said hey, it has to be fully interactive,” Hardie added.

As you wrap up your visit, you'll want to spend some time in the 1980s style arcade room.

Under the dim lights and token-fed machines, you are sure to take you on a trip down memory lane.

According to organizers, the National Videogame Museum is the only museum in America dedicated to the history of the video game industry.

If you do visit, make sure you stop and admire some of the meticulous artwork – all painted by hand.
