While you're out enjoying Independence Day, East Texas game wardens said it's especially true when spending time on the water, riding a jet ski or boat.
Smith Co. Game Warden Brad Clark said you must know the law. In Texas, anyone born after Sept. 1, 1993 must take a boater education course to operate a watercraft.
Clark said he sees jet ski accidents across East Texas lakes, particularly among teens.
"They're fun. They're nimble. They're fast, and people like to splash each other, or ride beside their friends, but that's when accidents can happen," he said. "None of them have brakes."
He said it's not like driving a car.
Another law - you can't ride a watercraft within 50 feet of another person in the water, unless you're idling.
