Tyler elementary school sees need within community

Jack Elementary School hosts shoe drive to help students within the Tyler Independent School District.

TYLER, Texas — Jack Elementary School is helping ‘Tie Up Tyler ISD.’

Students are collecting new pairs of lace-up tennis shoes for fellow students across the district.

“When our PE department became aware of a need in our community for new tennis shoes, we knew Jack students and parents could have an immediate impact,” Jack Elementary Principal, Brett Shelby, said.

The shoe drive is led by the physical education department. "We started talking about this last year, tossed it around with some principals and the counselor, that this would be a good thing to try," physical education teacher, Lisa Snell, said.

The school's goal is to collect 500 pairs of new lace-up tennis shoes by Feb. 4.

“Our students are doing so well in reaching out to their families, neighbors, and friends to contribute, that we may even exceed our campus goal," Shelby said.

In addition to shoes, the students are also collecting new pairs of socks.

"We talked a lot about when we need shoes many of us go buy a pair of shoes, but there are people who cannot do that," Snell said. "So, it's trying to meet a need for those who don't have as much as we have."

According to the district, when the school meets its goal, Shelby has promised to wear clown shoes for a day while running laps with each grade level.

“I just love the way that this service project will directly impact not only our Patriots but also students from across the district,” Shelby said. “Coach Snell and Coach Redwing saw a need and felt empowered to do something. The response is greater than we ever expected, and we are just honored that people are so willing to give.”

The district says the biggest need is shoes for younger boys and girls, sizes 7 to 10, as well as shoes for high school students, especially men’s size 9 and up.

You can help the students at Jack reach their goal. If you would like to donate a new pair of laced-up shoes and socks, you can drop them off at Jack Elementary School located at 1900 Balsam Gap Lane.
