Van High School brewing on-campus business

A group of Van high school students created, run and manage an on-campus coffee shop.

Students aren't the only thing that roam the halls of Van High School, but the sweet and bold smell of coffee as well.

It's all thanks to a group of students, known as the iTeam.

"The "i" stands for innovation, their job is to find ways for our school district, not just the campus, to move in a more of a innovative direction in education. Their suggestion was coffee,” says Van ISD Director of Instructional Technology, Jason Johnson.

A coffee shop concept, logo, and even structure was all created and built by students.

"When you let students drive the learning process that’s the truest form of education that you can achieve. That’s what we have here, we have students who have thought of this," says Johnson.

They call it 'Bold School Coffee'.

“It’s an old school concept, old rock kinda thing," said Emily Standford, Van High School student.

"We decided that we were going to name the drinks after classic songs," Julianne Johnson, Van High School student.

From Sharp Dressed Man, Ring of Fire and Hotel California - the concept of the old school rock vibe runs rich through every detail of the coffee shop.

The profits go back into the business and into other activities the library or "Steam (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math) Room".

"The money that they make will either go back into the business or it goes into the "Steam Room" itself to fund different activities. We’ve tried to make this more of a maker atmosphere," says Johnson.

The students might not go work in a coffee shop after high school but they are taking away skills that they will use after the graduate.
