VERIFY: Hurricanes v.s. Volcanoes

With Hurricane Lane heading toward Hawaii, some are asking what this means for volcanic activity on the Big Island. Meteorologist Michael Behrens Verifies!

TYLER, TX — With Hurricane Lane heading toward Hawaii, some are asking what this means for volcanic activity on the Big Island. Well, we wanted to Verify what this means as well. To do so I contacted Ben Andrews, Ph.D., who is the director of the Global Volcanism Program at the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History. We asked him what impacts the hurricane might have on the eruption, what it might mean for the lava flows, and if it could cause any other impacts on the island's volcanic activity.

What we found out is that any claims of major impacts on Hawaii's volcanic activity by Hurricane Lane are indeed false, but that won't always be the case for all eruptions, at least in some regards. To find out why, watch the video above and join us as we Verify!
