The statewide gas price average in Texas is now $2.76 for a gallon of regular unleaded fuel, AAA announced on Thursday.

That price is six cents more than last week and is 58 cents more per gallon compared to this day in 2017.

Doctor Harold Doty, a professor at UT Tyler, said there are several variables affecting this year’s spike.

He said in Texas, oil plants are producing more than enough oil but a lack of infrastructure is slowing down oil companies from putting that product on the market right away.

“I think the most important thing for people to remember is there is no gas shortage," said Dr. Doty. "What we have right now are some important and powerful players in the market artificially constrain the supply of oil to artificially raise gas prices.”

He went on to say, drivers shouldn't panic just yet.

“The things I’m seeing suggest to me that we are fluttering at the top of the range for this cycle and I actually anticipate we are going to see oil prices start to creep back down which means the price of gasoline should start to creep back down,” said Dr. Doty.

To save money at the pump you can download an app like GasBuddy or Gas Guru. Both applications tell you where you can find the cheapest gas in your city.

According to AAA, you can get better gas mileage by doing things like:

  • Getting the junk out of your trunk. Those pounds can hurt.
  • Maintain your recommended tire pressure for your vehicle – because low pressure reduces your fuel economy.
  • Keep your air filter clean to avoid making your car work harder.
  • Drive the speed limit. Speeding is a quick way to burn your gas.
