Whataburger Coach of the Week: Barry Bowman

Barry Bowman is our Week 4, Whataburger Coach of the Week!

He holds multiple state and regional "Coach of the Year" honors, but those recognitions aren't for what he's done on the field.

"One thing that was really great with Coach Bowman was, he would always go to bat for us as kids. As far as taking up for us in certain situations and always behind us and supporting us on the field and off the field," says John McGarvey, Offensive Coordinator, "He’s a players coach, he gets along with us."

Barry Bowman joined the Roughrider family in 2015 as head coach and athletic director, it was in that same year he would take the team to the District Championship, and then back to the playoffs each of the next two years.

Football is in his blood, not only has he coached for more than 30 years, he spent some time in the NFL.

Bowman and those who know him say his relationship with the students is most important.

"That has allowed what success that but I’ve been able to be a part of, it's always about the people around you it’s not about what I do it’s about the people you can surround yourself with The relationship with kids is the big deal," says Barry Bowman

The relationship he has with his which includes men who have previously played for him, and players is held together with respect, understanding and love.

"One thing that comes to mind to me as being comfortable being able to play for him and knowing what he expected from them. Now, being able to work for him and have that same relationship that helps me being comfortable confident I do think he believes in me," says, McGarvey

Bowman understands every player is different and needs a role model in some way.

"He's like another dad he’s always talking to me always teaching me lifestyles not only how to be a football player but how to be a man too." Jayden Hicks, Junior QB

"Nowadays, Kids are raising themselves and they’re in one parent homes or they’re living with grandparents or their situations where there’s not a positive male role model in their life." says Bowman

What matters most to coach Bowman isn't the number in bright lights on a scoreboard.

"When I decide and say that my time is up and I can go to the rocking chair on the front porch and some kid who has now young man or young lady, they bring their family and find out where I’m at and introduce them to me. That matters the most is with those kids so how about you as a coach I was at the staff when they get ready to leave here." says Bowman
