LONGVIEW, Texas — Two Longview Independent School District athletic trainers will be honored by the State of Texas for saving the life of the school's cross country coach in October 2018.

According to the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation, on Monday, October 23, 2018, licensed athletic trainers Deirdre Kay Scotter and Kristin N. Bell came to the rescue of Lobos cross country coach Ken Jernigan, who collapsed during track practice. The two women used an AED and CPR to resuscitate him and continued with CPR until emergency medical personnel arrived. 

Medical professionals deemed Coach Jernigan had a heart attack, reports the TDLR.

The duo will be recognized during the TDLR's Advisory Board of Athletic Trainers meeting at 9 a.m. on Monday, January 14, in Austin.
