LUFKIN TRAFFIC UPDATE: One northbound lane of Loop 287 open

Lufkin Police are getting numerous calls about gravel and tar stuck to tires after driving on the east side of Loop 287.

UPDATE: Jessica Pebsworth with the Lufkin Police Department reports that one northbound lane on Loop 287 is now open.

The southbound side still closed.

TXDOT contractors continuing to repair damage. Allow extra time traveling within the city.

Jessica Pebsworth released the following statement:

Lone Star Hazmat Teams will be set up in a TxDOT/Clark Construction designated area near FM 2021 (Davisville Road) at Loop 287, removing tar/gravel from people's vehicles from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. They have assured us that they are professionals and this is being handled safely and within EPA guidelines for cleanup/removal.

A section of Loop 287 in Lufkin is now closed due to problems from recent repair work.

Loop 287 from the south intersection of Highway 59 to the north intersection of Highway 59 is now closed until further notice.

The area was recently repaired, and police are getting numerous reports of tar and gravel stuck to tires. Spokesperson Jessica Pebsworth said some patrol cars tires were also affected.

Officers will assist stranded motorists only - call the non-emergency line at 903-633-0356.

Pebsworth advised that this is a non-emergency issue and not to call the emergency line. Lufkin administrators are working on a long-term plan.

TxDOT is directing people with damaged vehicles to contact Clark Construction at 210-661-6785 to start the claim process.
