MADD files petition to have Couch moved to adult court

DALLAS -- Mothers Against Drunk Driving wants Ethan Couch tried as an adult.

The group has launched a petition asking that the case of the "affluenza" teen -- who was given probation in 2013 for a drunk driving crash that killed four people -- be moved to adult court during his transfer hearing on Jan. 19. Couch is still in Mexico after fleeing with his mother, Tonya.

MADD wants 30,000 signatures by the hearing and says that transferring Couch from juvenile court to adult court "gives the criminal justice system the opportunity to hold him accountable by ensuring his probation extends beyond his 19th birthday in April 2016," the group said on Monday.

“Couch has been found, and everything possible must be done to hold him accountable and to ensure that Couch has no more victims,” MADD National President Colleen Sheehey-Church, whose 18-year-old son Dustin was killed by an underage drunk and drugged driver, said. “Couch is not a child. His actions are not that of a child. Four people were killed and several injured, and Couch continues to show no remorse and blatant disregard for the law.”

Meanwhile Tonya Couch will be asking for a bond reduction in Tarrant County Monday morning. She is charged with hindering apprehension.
